Synopsis:

The Sketchbook Project takes place every year, in conjunction with the KickstART Festival for National Youth Week.

The Sketchbook Project is an opportunity for young people aged 12-26 to create something completely unique and share it with the world!

Once registered, participants are sent a free blank sketchbook and return envelope, ready to be cut, torn, painted and filled.

Participants are then asked to send back their sketchbooks to Propel Youth Arts WA, ready to be exhibited.

The final leg of the tour sees the sketchbooks on display at the State Library of WA until 30 January 2015.

The Travelling Sketchbook Exhibition is presented by Propel Youth Arts WA.

Review: You don’t have far to walk to reach this exhibition from the last and no pennies spent again, score! It’s a lovely idea to encourage young people to be more creative and share their work with the world. Starting with a blank page with no theme is always hard as when creating it is often easier to limit yourself to one as then you have a boundary and rules to break so interested to see everyone’s inner expression!

See your favourite Briefs boys perform alongside a hand picked selection of gender offenders and talented troublemakers from all over the Fringe.

Club Briefs was born in the back warehouse space of a bookshop in Brisbane’s West End in 2008. The boys put on a club night to give performers the chance to try out some new late night cabaret/variety acts. There were no rules or restrictions. They weren’t answering to a brief or a venue or a funding body. It was purely artist driven with no agenda. It was completely off the radar. It was stuck together with a bit of hope, gaff and glitter. It was wonderful.

Experience for yourself the club night that spawned the cult variety show that is taking the world by storm. Get your sticky fingers on a seat.

Review: What can happen when artists and creatives come together with no boundaries? That little bit of magic that makes for great entertainment, it’s late, you’ve already got those feet tapping so why not? You will become a hipster in next to no time…

Synopsis: Look out for the super cute, big, pink Brookfield Bunnies!

Review: A clever installation making you interact with social media and get ‘normal’ people talking about art. An interactive engaging piece that gets you actively looking out for art around you. It’s an Easter egg hunt come early! A really fun exhibit to get you day off to a hop, a step and a jump!

The 14th exhibition in Grand Lane sees Jacqueline Ball making data in her sleep, Tom Freeman extends his use of colours in an exploration of geometric shapes, Nathan Brooker muses on  transitional environments via the inside of a Telstra phone box, Oliver Hull imagines scientists’ responses to the landscape of Mars, and brothers Andrew and David Wood shoot constellations into a car bonnet.

Review. Free event! Those words are always music to our ears! These exhibits are incredibly diverse; each artist explores completely different methods of expression which opens your eyes to more and more art forms enhancing your cultural education! Synopsis: An improvised cabaret featuring Bunraku Puppetry for discerningly twisted adult audiences. Expect riotous exploits, malarkey, molestation and mirth hitherto unseen on the west coast of ‘Straya!’
Following their hugely successful runs at the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringes and hoping to capitalise on ten five star reviews, puppetry’s Balkan bad boys Boris & Sergey (simply the greatest vaudevillian double act ever conceived for the small stage) present for your viewing, pleasure a plethora of pleasing plays and skits! One hour continuous flow of amusement.
Flabbergast Theatre have been travelling the globe with Boris & Sergey spreading riotous exploits, malarkey, molestation and mirth for three years, garnering plaudits and denigrations from the world’s ‘cherished critics,’ see what the fuss is about and leap aboard the bandwagon before it crushes you beneath its mighty wheels of doom!

Review:  A real smorgesboard of entertainment, a little-bit rude, but hopefully that’ll just make you more interested! Also late night we are sure you’ll be game for some slightly more risqué entertainment! Don’t be put off by the ‘out-there’ attitude there are some great forms of entertainment on offer throughout this piece. The comedy is wonderfully timed and perfectly presented.

Day 6: Feeling Arty!

Almost one week of the fringe has passed, it’s gone so quickly! You know what they say time flies when you’re having fun, and we’re having a ball! Today we thought would be a good day to re-kindle one of the key factors of the fringe; celebrating art in all its forms. So grab your Beret and alons-y!

Now you’re in the arty mood I’m sure you will agree best to get started with some visual art:

  • Bodies on the Line 2015 Presenter: David Grant, Origin:WA, Genre: Visual Arts, Date/s: 7.30 am Wednesday 28 January 2015 to Saturday 21 February 2015Duration:480 – 540 Minutes, Venue: Cafe Murano

Synopsis: Bodies on the Line is a 10-year collaborative project featuring the work of Perth artist David Grant and a wide group of models. Started in 2008, it is due for completion in 2018. Bodies on the Line 2015 is the third large-scale exhibition of the project. The artworks produced are collaboration between artist and model. The poses and background artwork are inspired by the mood and conversation of the model. The models’ comments, sometimes written on the artworks by the models or recorded for publication, are an integral and important part of the project. The models come from many walks of life, range in age from 20 to 74 and all celebrate their individuality. To date there have been 68 models involved with the project.

Review:  This piece’s use of conversation gives a new insight into the art world. Often you can see a piece and like to know more about the intention behind it or the subject of the work, by breaking down these barriers it creates art which is really accessible, rather than you walking around at a loss while you hear other’s vocalise ‘arty’ buzz worlds and you stand there nodding feeling awkward!

The Art Gallery of Western Australia has exhibits which takes you around the world, throughout the ages giving you in-depth view of art, as well as additional exhibitions exploring specific artists. With so much to see here you’ll be sure to feel culturally enriched!

Sci-tech has many interactive exhibits and even a planetarium available during the fringe! With all the beauty of the natural world, space the universe and everything!

PICA  contains a wide variety of exhibits so even if you think modern art isn’t for you there might be something here that’ll   maybe change your mind. Also when you’re looking around you want be lost for explanations of the pieces to help you understand the work better.

Synopsis: Four friends. One party. One unforgettable night.

You step outside for some air. It’s the middle of summer, and the sun hasn’t been down for long. You’ve been drinking since 3pm and you’ve lost your friend to some jerk’s bedroom. You head towards the water to try and wake yourself up. There are two people going at it on the steps of the pool. You’re about to throw in the towel and head home, when you notice a third person in the pool. Face down.

What do you do?

You’ll sink another beer and have another shot. This isn’t a slippery slope, it’s just what you do. Because it’s what you’ve always known.

From the team that brought you theatre in a home and a cafe, brings you theatre in a pool. The Cutting Room Floor’s latest devised production, I Can Breathe Underwater, explores the question: How do we grieve when we’ve never been taught?

Returning from a national tour of their 2014 sell out Fringe show ‘All The Single Lad(ie)s’, The Cutting Room Floor invites you to head down to the poolside for a new and exciting theatrical experience in Perth.

Review: Another really thought provoking piece of theatre.  This kind of theatre is very popular at the moment, using modern devising techniques and raising questions in a confronting style. This isn’t so distancing though that it feels like your being shouted at, it’s completely gripping and entertaining but has a strong message.

Day 5: Let’s get sensual!

Not like that! Yesterday’s Skyworks set against the beautiful Swan River and Perth City backdrop were truly spectacular. So whilst we were in that kind of awed mood we thought we should make today about exploring your senses. We better get started then!

Synopsis: The Substance of Memory is an exhibition integrating videos, projections, photo-media and sound installations that examines discourses surrounding family archives, memory and new media. Perth-based interdisciplinary artist Emily Hornum illuminates the ephemeral nature of memory and our reliance on external devices to archive our family memories.

This interactive and engaging exhibition will immerse audiences of all ages in a nostalgic dialogue with family archiving practices. Her installations interplay between analogue and digital technologies to expose their materiality and the ways in which they alter our multi-sensory experiences and participatory engagement with family archives.

The public is invited to come and talk with the artist throughout her two-week residency at Spectrum Project Space, which will be used as an open studio to refine the installations for this exhibition. The culminating exhibition will be open for two-weeks, with an opening night held on Thursday 29 January. A feature of the exhibition will be an Artist Talk to stimulate discussion surrounding new media and its effect on the family archive and memory, whilst the artist reflexively engages with her two-year practice-led research work-in-progress.

Review: Another ‘must see’ for any Theatre festival worth anything is some improvisation. This improvisation piece in particular is great. The use of conversations is not only intriguing and does tap into our sense of being, but is so relatable and entertaining without even trying. Another interactive experience that’ll keep you engaged throughout and your brain ticking over.

Award winning Perth production company Creative Collaborations returns to Fringe World for a fourth consecutive season with ‘MUMMY’.

‘MUMMY’ is based, though very loosely, on a true story. The names and places have been changed but most people will remember something like this…
“In February last year, the body of an elderly lady was found in a flat in Melbourne. She’d been dead for six years. During that time, she’d often been seen standing at her window. A neighbour told the Coroner’s Court: “We looked up and there was someone at the top window. It looked like the old lady. She saw us, stepped back and moved away.”

Dead for six years and left to rot, she’s part of the furniture now. “Do you know how much I paid for this armchair? Look, it’s ruined! Scotchguard my arse… Perhaps I should have done!” Well, you’d be angry too.

“What did I do to deserve this?” Good question Alice, and I think you know very well what you did. And isn’t that him outside?

Written and directed by Mick Devine, starring Claire Munday. Warning: contains language as foul as the body itself, and small bones. “Genuinly moving. Decidedly weird.”

Review:

The rather morbid setting for this piece might have you more over-come with a sense of fear, but don’t you worry! MUMMY may look a bit too scary but it is also incredibly thought provoking and you will genuinely empathise with the protagonist. This is the last night to catch this, so I bet your glad we convinced you not to judge this by its ‘cover’. At the very least you will leave the theatre after watching this and it’ll at least add something to your ‘fringe’ experience.

Review:  Again don’t be put off by the name here this is a night not to miss! With some songs and audience participation to keep your senses all over the place., not to mention the comedians that perform at this event, it will be sure to give your sense of humour a good ‘rib-tickling’!

Review: What better way to start Australia day than to go an event which discusses Australian identity! This is a particularly cultural experience, with references to all attributes of Australian life. As part of his ongoing treatment, his therapist Doctor Vangillies suggests he start keeping a dream journal and documenting his dreams, nightmares, thoughts and fears. Matt’s journal serves as way to talk about what he sees, what is real and what is product of his vivid imagination and for while, it proves very effective, that is, until he meets Kelly.

The new neighbor across the street, Kelly is beautiful, talented, funny and she even has a trampoline, Matt is instantly smitten.

The show follows their awkward and impossible courtship as Matt struggles to find what is most important to him and what reality it belongs in.

Synopsis: At 8pm the sky above the Swan River will explode in colour for this much loved tradition.

The ‘Laser and Water Spectacular’ can be viewed from Langley Park and will be choreographed to the spectacular Skyworks display over the Swan River.

Fountains will spray jets of water into the air providing a glittering backdrop for lasers to create a symphony of vivid colours and dramatic beam effects.

WET ZONE: Within this zone (identified on the map downloadable at the bottom of this page), be prepared that you may get wet as a result of the spray of the Water and Laser Spectacular.

Review: This show is simply spectacular. The light/laser show is truly mind-bogglingly brilliant and the Fireworks are out of this world. This sky show is often dubbed one of the best if not THE best in the whole of Australia.  Find a spot to sit down, look up and prepare to have your breath taken away!

Well it’s the third day of festivities, we’re pretty settled in now to fringe life over here and so must you too. So we’re going to shake things up and ‘spice up your life’ as The Spice Girls song goes (note cultural 90’s reference)! You’ve sampled some brave and exciting things, but you’ve really been taking baby steps, it’s time to take some leaps and bounds and go full out crazy! Here’s our pick for today to really get you sampling the ‘new’.

Start the day:

We like to start the day with theatre on an ordinary day BUT  today is no ordinary day. Let’s see some controversial visual art instead!

New passports, new photography is a celebration of the Gallery’s recent acquisitions of Indigenous and non-Indigenous photography around the theme of portraiture. New passports, new photography ranges from soft, personal imagery to strong and powerful statements, from the intimate to the deeply political. It represents some of the ways identity is represented and self is shaped through this most accessible yet most challenging of contemporary art-forms.

This is exactly the type of theatre to go and see for something ‘different’; with some truly touching subjects presented in a truly awe-inspiring way you’ll be glad today is the day you pushed the boundaries. Review: Nothing like a bit of Cabaret to end a day full of variety and ‘alternative’ ideas. This variety performance let’s you see some of the best ‘weird and wonderful’ things on offer. After seeing this and everything else you’ve seen today you may never be shocked again, although we doubt it!

Yesterday was pretty full-on and today we are taking slightly more of a back-seat by attending the vast array of children’s events. Review: Puppets are the new ‘vogue’ in theatre-land. You need to see some Puppet Theatre to fully baptize you into the world of scarf-twirling ‘lovies’. This isn’t a puppet show to take the kids, with a unique take on a cult-classic film. Viewer discretion is definitely advised if you’re easily offended. But you should definitely see at least 1 part for the experience. The gusto and performance quality of the show however, you’ll probably stay for the whole 3 hours!

Top tip: As you can see this is billed as a comedy event but it’s also theatrical event as we said with cabaret these terms are interchangeable. You should flick through the entire catalogue so you don’t miss a show that could be right up your street just billed as a different genre.

Feature: “It is storytelling that slowly takes over the room,” says director Hannah Smith, who co-wrote and devised the piece with its single performer Ralph McCubbin Howell.

Adds Howell: “It’s a dark fairytale in the vein of a Neil Gaiman or a Susanna Clarke or a Tim Burton. It’s the story of a bookbinder’s apprentice who doesn’t heed the instructions he’s been given and finds himself bound into one of his books.”

Review:  If you don’t see anything else today see this. This is our featured production of the day. Again this is puppet theatre so it ticks the theatre in style box, but it also uses shadow-play and music adding to the intensity of the piece. This piece is truly gripping you’ll leave thinking ‘is this really children’s theatre?’

Review: You’ve seen some light-hearted stuff, now it’s time to explore your adult nature (But not too much!). If you want to see ‘proper’ Cabaret you have to look to continental Europe and this French Cabaret definitely ticks that box!  It’s time to let go of those preconceptions and enjoy the fringe for all its ‘weirdness’ and witness something ‘new’.

This deeeesgusting kids comedian has a barrage of horrible gags and weird routines centred around all those things kids love.. boogers, bottoms, stinks and smells! In this fifty minute roller-coaster ride of deeeeesgustingness expect an introduction to Mr Snot bottom’s antique fart collection, meet his nits and hear the tale of the great bum rubbing festival! Perfect for ages 4 and up and their sick and twisted parents!

Mark Trenwith has starred in numerous children’s shows such as Ben Ten Live, Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends and as Bounce Back Man on ABCTV. He also regularly visits The Royal Children’s Hospital as Captain Starlight and is a previous Comedy Festival Moosehead Recipient and Adelaide Comedy Award

Review:

A golden rule of comedy is: comedy that tries too hard to be funny isn’t funny. Trying too hard isn’t a bad thing, it shows keenness and enthusiasm but this piece seems to lean more into desperation. If you attach yourself to clichés and preconceptions onto children’s theatre/comedy then you are at least underestimating them and a mos patronising them.

Other reviews: “[An] hour of fart-bum-eugh gags” follows the method of: “saying the words bum, snot and fart often enough [to] make this age group laugh.”

On the other hand: “His delivery of toilet humour is unashamed and brilliant…as clever as it gets – …there is no doubt that this show does what it promises. It was stinky. It was silly. It was fun.”

It’s not all bad, this guy gets varied reviewers so you might go for it. However on your head be it!

Today’s children live in a technological age, this guy is fully aware of it and exploits it!

Fringe World Festival Begins!

It’s here! The start of The Perth Fringe World Festival!; The jam-packed 4-day opening weekend kicks things off  TODAY. Just today there are over 100 events happening and we couldn’t be more excited. If you can find one, get your hands on the early-bird $5 ‘Rush-tix’.

If you cant get to the festival never fear here we are to fill you in on the merriments that will en-sue over the next month.

This page is ran by two ‘Pom’ theatre and performing arts fanatics. We ourselves have performed in the world renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as many professional  performing ventures. What is particularly exciting about the Perth World Fringe Festival is its ‘new-ness’ in a vibrant, young city, right in its cultural centre.

The area of Northbridge in Perth could not be a more ‘Perthfect’ setting for the centre of  this festival to unfold; not only containing most of Perth’s major theatre’s but also thriving with multiculturalism adding to the real buzz going on.  The festival spreads out beyond Northbridge across Perth providing something for everyone anywhere in the area.

Starting The Day:

  • Everything Unknown, Presenter: Gettin Hectic, Genre: Theatre: Venue: Cottesloe Beach Hotel, Duration: 30 minutes, Dates: Friday 23 January 2015 to Sunday 22 February 2015Synposis: created by acclaimed UK theatre company non zero one, is an immersive 30 minute audio journey in headphones that will take you to the beach and then to the other side of the world.     Review:  Being presented by fellow Poms we could be accused of being internationally biased, but our rule generally is to start off with a good bit of theatre…and what kind of theatre this piece is! This is exactly the kind of theatre you need to see to understand what ‘fringe’ theatre means; edgy, pushing the boundaries and telling an engaging story. With shows on every half hour from 12pm-9pm until the end of the festival these actors deserve a medal (and 30 minutes of your time) ! You will also get up close and personal with Perth’s multicultural smells , sights and tastes. Therefore,  to them Shakespeare is written off as ‘boring’. This piece is fully aware of these pre-conceptions so  uses a modern, accessible and comic approach. It isn’t a strict presentation of a play its story telling,  comedy and above all: fun. Hopefully,  after leaving you’ll give The Bard another chance. Also fringe isn’t fringe without seeing some Cabaret. Cabaret has become a very loose term, but this is a nice easy one to settle you in, we can delve into the more risqué and rambunctious later on.

  • Mac The Comedy Computer’s Variety 52-Minute Spectacular! , Presenter:Novel Ideas,Origin:WA,Genre:Cabaret,Date/s:Friday 23 January 2015 to Saturday 21 February 2015 Duration: 54 Minutes, Venue:Noodle Palace at Central – Ramen Room, 11:45pmSynopsis:Mac will also sometimes be joined by his constant offsider, Steve The Horribly un-PC PC; a digital team-up like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, if one of them was incredibly prejudiced and the other was a manic depressant and both weren’t humans.Review: This is listed as a Cabaret event but its basically Stand-up comedy. Top-tip if you cant see a show you fancy in comedy look in Ca beret sometimes the terms are interchangeable.Back on topic: If you haven’t passed out from raving at the silent disco then you should head onto some comedy. This comedy is just what you need late night, maybe feeling a bit ‘merry’: something a bit rude,cheeky a little bit edgy but again its your first night you don’t want to go to the most ‘outrageous’ thing. This is perfect for a late night laugh.
